FATIMA FAMILY CENTER RECEIVES $3,000 GRANT FROM THE DOLLAR GENERAL LITERACY FOUNDATION
CLEVELAND, OH (5/18/12) – Fatima Family Center, a program of Cleveland Catholic Charities located in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood, received a $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The grant will be used to support the Nook Café – which will provide children ages pre-school through teens – with Nook tablets, which they will use to read pre-selected, age-appropriate books. Book discussions will be facilitated by counselors during summer camp.
“Our children embrace technology. I can think of no better way to draw them to reading and help them improve their critical thinking, comprehension, and reading skills than by creating this Nook (E-reader) Café as a new feature of our summer camp,” stated Ms. LaJean Ray, director of the Fatima Family Center. She continued, “The few studies that have been conducted confirm that technology is beneficial because it allows children to engage all of their senses in the learning process.”
The Fatima Family Center provides programs and services for all ages, including an early learning center, Head Start, cultural, leadership and development activities for children and youth, homework assistance, summer camp, field trips and recreational programs. Fatima also provides adult services including parenting classes, computer lab, health screenings and food pantry. Older adults can benefit from socialization activities designed specifically for them.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awards grants to organizations in communities served by Dollar General. The literacy grants support nonprofit organizations that provide literacy services such as adult basic education, GED preparation
